Sooo I've managed to get myself a new race truck, ended up picking up the ranger in the for sale thread by bushlover, and here goes the remainder of the build lol. My plan for the ranger is to stretch the wheelbase out to 120" as 108 will be to short to keep control of in the drags and rough stuff, for the powertrain it will be getting the new motor out of the race truck, theres a build thread already started on here, but its a 400 ford stroked to 434 cubes (forged 4340 crank and rods, custom forged pistons, 4 bolt mains, bolt partially filled with cement, everything studded, several oiling mods, and some other junk lol), 13.5:1 cr, billet solid roller .680 lift cam, hogged out cleveland 4v heads, 2.25" primary 4" collector upright headers, holley 1050 dominator and rosch high rise single plane intake and intake spacers for use of 4v heads and intake on a 400 block, then msd dizzy and 6al2 ignition box, comp cams cromo roller rockers and solid roller lifters, pushrods, valve springs, etc. We are aiming for 700 ponies on the dyno with this beast, or as close as possible, old version at stock displacement and a point and half less cr and more less port work was good for 600, so we'll see how it goes, either way you shake it, its a pretty hairy little small block, and one of the more powerful 400 fords in the area. AND i have plenty of faith that the factory iron will handle the abuse too, last motor the kieth black hyper piston fragged and the rod took out the block, funny thing is that the crank and main caps were still reusable after a quick cleanup, and thats after the motor let go at 7000rpms lol.

For powertrain i will be going with a ford toploader 4sp with the big 1 3/8" input and 31 spline output, custom spec'd clutch built locally to the engine builder, then a one off adapter to a nv 273 transfer case out of a superduty, the goal is light and strong (hell the tcase is heavier than the tranny, and these trannies hold up to harder abuse on a drag strip then what most trucks can dish out on the trail) and simple. The axles in the ranger will be yanked out and my hp d60 and sterling with lockrights and 4.56 gears will be installed. I will be sticking with radius arms front and back, but i'm going to play with the 4-link calculator found on pirate to play with the geometry and see what i can do for numbers and get this thing launching as hard as a built drag car. Anyway i will let the pictures do the talking, it will be a bit before any work gets done just due to the work schedule, but i gotta start somewhere:

So overall theres a fair bit of rework to do to get everything the way i want it, with the biggest being redoing all of the brackets to get the geometry and clearences i want, the the power train swap, then the cage. The enginer swap will be interesting as it will be tight, but i'm not against hacking up the body to get it to fit. I can already for see the transfercase being a pita to fit in the frame rail, but no biggie as again i have no issue changing things to fit. The flat bed will stay, but any unused frame will get chopped off, and i think i will plate the ranger frame and tube frame of the flat bed together as well.. For a cage I think its going to be half exo half internal, as head space in these rangers is tight to begin with and with a helmet i do not want to be close to any bars as i know this rig will be beatin. That said I will go with a double B pillar setup with one pillar being entirely outside of the cab and the other have the top outside and the down bars come inside the cage, so that i can run the seat belts and seats and door bars etc and still have an extremely safe cage, I will sketcch up some pictures once I have a few spare moments. Thats it for now folks, more to come later.

Good score Cody! Can't wait until she's done. Sometimes the building gods just smile down on you. Other times they find a big pile of sand and kick it in your face.

Yeah i can't wait to get this thing together, espically since all the parts are here now. But the sand in the face for me is going to be the time to work on it lol, But to get the suspension diffs and powertrain the way i want wont be too bad, as majority of the brackets can be cut before hand, and the powertrain swap will be straight foward as well, so we shall see.

cody you should have no problem fitting the drivetrain and the motor will fit fine, it is just getting it through that little hole in the top. The 460 that was in mine had to be spun 90 degreas to fit through the hole then spun back and in. If you have any questions about rangers or how I did it give me a shout

Kewl, thanks brian, yeah i plan on doing a one piecce tilt front clip to make it easier to work on as well, so getting it in and out should be a little easier that way. How was yours for room between the bellhousing and firewall?

mine was good but the firewall to floor seam needs to be clearance, most of it can just be bent down flat and there is a hump on one side that needs to be massaged with a rubber mallet or dead blow

Kewl, sounds like it shouldn't be much of an issue then. Now I have a question for clay, with the nv273/271 cases, how would one go about making it a divorced unit? As I know you did it on the burb', that said are you guys able to bring in the parts to change it over?

Kewl, yeah i'm looking at the frame and the lack of room to clear the case unless i chop and build in some clearence, and i dunno if i want to do that.

Couple vids I've posted up before, thought I'd show the old truck one last time, plus it gives some idea of where the motor will be performance wise, plus a couple of when it let go lol:

Soo I've decided that i'm going to try to get this running for pollockville, I do have a few extra days coming up prior to the race to get working on this. I won't be swapping motors or anything, just enough to try the powertrain out before i pull out so i can sell it. So first thing is get it fired, front brakes (just run lines), flip the rear diff, tie rod end (cut the rear panhard bar mount and shock tabs, flip diff and reweld) driveshafts, seat belt mounts and a couple extra roll bar mounting points, rip out the dash and go play, it will be tight but fun. That said anyone with some free time next thursday-friday-saturday should come down and give me a hand :D. There'd be a free race entry to the first person to lend a hand :D.

Bumpy, the pollockville thing never happened lol, but anywa i took a few days off to work on it and thirsday Ipushed the ranger into the shop and basically cut the frame off from just behind the engine crossmember forward, all front sheetmetal and old power train are out, mockup motor in place and new solid motor mounts are built (mid plate and a front plate), and new front frame rails are tacked in place. I have lots of pictures (up on Facebook if anyone cares to get them for me as I'm on my phone), will post them tonight.

I was offered a place up here to work on it/keep it here and I'm thinking I'm going to do so and get this thing going.
